Australia Day

January 26, 2009 – 9:04 pm by jennie

We had a nice day out for Australia Day. Gilly had his normal morning nap routine, then we headed off to Ciudad Guzman, which is about an hours drive away from us. The central plaza and churches were beautiful and there were lots of good eats from the food stalls! We wandered around a bit and had a tasty lunch, then drove up to see the lake to the north of the town, before heading home on the non-toll road which meanders through the countryside. Gilly managed to stay awake all the way home, so when we got back we took him for a good walk to tucker him out before his dinner. On the way to the park we met a familiar face around our neighborhood, Bobby, the yellow labrador.  At the park, Gilly got in a lot of good walking practice.  Look at the little man go!  The Australian Kirby Lovells finished off the day with a bed time reading of Possum Magic.  Happy Australia Day!

Hail to the Chief

January 20, 2009 – 9:03 pm by jennie

Gilbertlandia has been all abuzz with inauguration fever! Gilly donned his red, white and blue to watch the swearing in ceremony:

Inauguration Day

Later, he enjoyed some delicious apple pie in celebration of this historic day.

Celebratory pie eating!

Gilly’s very serious about pie eating, as you can see:

So serious that he didn’t leave a smidgen of pie or ice cream for his dad to finish off for him! I think Gilly may very well become quite interested in politics, at least if there is pie involved!

The Beach

December 29, 2008 – 9:35 pm by jennie

Gilly got to go for his first big play at the beach last Saturday. He took his afternoon nap in the car as we drove to Playa Boca de Pascuales, outside of Tecoman. Once we arrived, it was time for his afternoon snack so we all had a bite at Las Hamacas restaurant. Then it was time to put on his Flippers gear (thanks, Nana!) and hit the beach! He loved, loved, loved playing in the waves, and was giggling the entire time. Now we’re thinking that once the young man outgrows his morning nap and has a bit more free time on his hands, we’ll go for a beach weekend. In the meantime, we can all enjoy this video of Gilly’s first encounter with the Pacific.

Merry Christmas!

Here’s Gilly’s entry in the society page. This is a picture from one of the local newspapers of the Halloween party he attended at his school.

First Birthday!

December 6, 2008 – 7:17 pm by jennie

Although you wouldn’t know it from the deathly silence here on Gilly’s blog, he did manage to turn one year old! Yay Gilly! His birthday fell during a bit of a weird time here in Gilbertlandia, as his dad was suffering from that fun tropical disease dengue fever! We still managed to pull together the birthday essentials for the young man. He opened presents in the morning, then had cake time in the afternoon. Gilly’s favorite color at the moment is purple, so he had purple icing and a purple candle on his apple spice cake, with vanilla ice cream on the side. After he dug into his cake, he got to enjoy a video conference with his Gramps, Nana and Aunt Yvette in Australia. Then we got to sort out how to get all the cake and ice cream off of him, before bed time. Photos of the birthday related fun are now up in his gallery. Enjoy!

Baby Signs Update II

November 13, 2008 – 7:56 pm by jennie

We’ve always joked that Gilly’s first word would be either ‘Jojo‘ or ‘Calvin‘, rather than ‘mama’ or ‘dada’. We’ve been proven partly right, in that his first baby sign is the one for ‘dog’! He uses it whenever he sees Jojo or Calvin, and whenever we run into other dogs while out walking. I introduced him to a horse today, and I thought maybe he might try and tell me that it was a dog, but nope, he wasn’t at all interested in providing me with any cute anecdotes! He’s also started using the baby sign for ‘fan’. ‘dog’ and ‘fan’. Not ‘milk’, ‘juice’, ‘diaper’, etc. Here in Gilbertlandia, it’s all about the dogs and the fans!

Happy (early) Halloween!

October 29, 2008 – 8:02 pm by jennie

Gilly attended the Halloween party at his school today. He managed to put the bunny ears his nana brought him at Easter time to good use in his costume. We took many pictures of our hoppy bunny (soy un conejito saltarin!). Enjoy!

11 months!

October 22, 2008 – 9:40 pm by jennie

Believe it or not, Gilly is now 11 months old! I’m so excited about his upcoming birthday. We’ve already figured out an appropriate present for him and I’ve been perusing baby friendly birthday cake recipes. He’s blissfully unaware, going about his daily routine, being “a little man, doing the best that a little man can” as one of his songs goes. Today he decided that Calvin’s crate is great fun. He dragged a variety of toys in there and spent a good amount of time peek-a-booing me, first peering at me through the side window, then hiding his head, then popping it out the front door, then hiding again, then back to the window to start all over again, all with giggles and a big grin. He’s turned into a real giggler. We didn’t get a huge number of pictures of him last month, but what we did get are now available in his 10 months gallery. We promise to do better this month!

New developments

October 8, 2008 – 9:44 pm by jennie

What’s new in Gilbertlandia?

  1. Stepping! Gilly is happy to take some steps as he holds onto his dad’s hands. I have a feeling a new video will soon be in the works!
  2. Also new…teeth! Sort of! There are no signs of any teeth down below, but you can now see where six of his upper teeth are, beneath the gum, with the two front ones just beginning to break through. He doesn’t seem to be too bothered by it all, knock on wood. He’s not all that hot on the new dental hygiene regime that’s being instituted in response, though!
  3. He’s also adding new foods to the foods that he will deign to put into his mouth himself. It was all (and only!) about the Cheerios for a while, but now he’s gotten the whole idea of finger foods down and happily shoves a variety of chunks into his toothless gob.

I think that’s it, for new stuff. Maybe his dad will think of something else to add. Other activities that are not new, but still popular with the young man…drumming, pulling up (on everything!), head shaking, playing with dog leashes and dominoes (not at the same time). His favorite thing to do at class is to bend over and rummage around in the big bin of balls, with his big old Donald Duckish diaper butt sticking out…his dad says he looks like a very young George Smith! I wanted that link to go to a picture of George, butt up, pilfering the ball in a breakdown, but there is a surprising lack of such pictures available! If you, dear reader, can find one, please let us know!
