Mommy goes to nursery school

August 19, 2009 – 7:57 pm by jennie

Yesterday morning was our first parents’ meeting at Beto’s new school, the Instituto Federico Froebel. The academic director gave a bit of a speech, and then all the parents were sent off with their kids’ teachers. Beto’s teachers actually ran a mini-version of what a typical morning at the school will be like for Beto’s grade (Maternal), and all of us parents got to be students again.

Normally the kids sit down and have a home-packed breakfast not long after they arrive at the school. They didn’t let us parents eat, though!

The English speaking teacher went first and showed us what a circle was, and then held up a bunch of different objects and had us name them (tortillas, plates, wheels on a toy truck, etc) and say whether or not they were circles. Then we got to run to the playground equipment and find all the plastic circles from a bunch of circles, squares and triangles that had been hidden around the grounds. Then we got to come back to the work tables and make caterpillars by gluing circles onto pieces of paper with pre-drawn caterpillars.

Next it was the turn of the Spanish speaking teacher. She changed the theme from circles to parts of the body and did a bunch of different activities, singing, dancing, scavenger hunt, etc all relating to the body parts.

Beto’s new teachers are both very nice, very energetic, and very well prepared. I think he’s going to be quite happy with the wide variety of activities and the smooth pace at which everything moves along…Beto’s not a boy that likes to sit around waiting for things to happen! We visited quite a few schools before we selected this one, so were feeling pretty good about our choice, but now after the parent day I feel even more sure that this is going to work out very well for the young man. Especially as it turns out that there will be just three other kids (all boys!) in his class.

He starts next Monday, and will be at the front gates in his uniform with freshly scrubbed cheeks at 8:30 in the morning. His school day supposedly lasts until 12, but what they do at first is just send each kid home when they reckon they’ve had enough for that particular day. They say that normally after the first week they’ve all adjusted and are happy to be there for the full morning. One mother, who’s daughter is in Kinder 1, which is the year above Beto, says that her daughter started crying on the days she *didn’t* get to go to school. Hopefully Beto will love school that much too!

I think it's about nap time!

Firsts…

June 23, 2009 – 8:40 pm by jennie

I finally brought myself to take Beto in for his first haircut. I thought I was going to cry as his little curls were buzzed off…it was like watching him transform from baby Beto to little boy Beto, right in front of my eyes. Beto, on the other hand, wasn’t at all traumatized, as he sat on my lap pawing through the hairdresser’s candy jar during the whole procedure.

Beto’s been hard at work taking care of his first science project. He has 6 tadpoles that we collected from the little lake in Parque Hidalgo. He asks to go out back and see them many times each day and is quite happy to do his part in taking care of them, which is to give them some scoops of fresh water every day. Then again, he’s happy with any activity that involves scooping water! Several have back legs now and one sprouted front legs today. Luke’s certain that we’re raising cane toads.

Beto’s also been exercising his creative side with a new song that he’s written…the lyrics consist of ‘yeah yeah baby, baby yeah yeah!’. As well, he’s choreographed a dance which involves twirling in circles, and lifting your legs way high up in the air. He’s also been spending a lot of time walking backwards, and looks like he’s practicing his moonwalking while he does it. He recently discovered that he can stand on his tippy toes, so I imagine that that’ll be added in to his dance soon.  He’s a very busy little boy!

Someone says Nana!

May 22, 2009 – 2:51 pm by luke

A couple of Saturdays ago, we had a web-conference with Nana (Beto’s Australian grandmother) so that we could wish her a Happy Mothers Day, etc. The next day, Jennie was recounting to him how they’d been talking to Nana when he raised his voice and announced “Nana! Nana!” several times! Of course, I was too late with the camera, but I did manage to get him saying it once, at least.

As for his other Grandmom: don’t feel too bad! He’s just really been getting into his nana sounds recently, as evidenced by his eagerness to say ‘banana’ and ‘manzana’ (apple). It was, however, very sweet; especially on Australian Mother’s Day!

Favorite Things

April 19, 2009 – 10:39 pm by jennie

Gilly is well and truly in the throes of toddler-dom now, with babyhood a quickly fading memory, so I think it’s time to bring his favorite things up to date. The young man has changed so much in such a little time!

Favorite foods: Cheese, banana, avocado, mandarin, oatmeal, cherry cheesecake, whatever Mommy is trying to eat

Favorite books: From Head to Toe; Spot Loves His Daddy; Richard Scarry’s Best First Book Ever; The Shy Little Kitten; Buenas Noches, Gorila; The Tooth Book

Favorite songs: Any that contain ‘la la la la-ing’

Favorite activities: Playing with our foster kittens, watching ‘Signing Time’ videos, watching ‘Doki’ videos, play-doh, building tube and pipe structures with Daddy, playing in the curtains, water games in the kitchen sink, watering plants/playing with the hose, climbing absolutely everything, (cheating at) peek-a-boo, riding the train (and escalators!) at Zentralia, being chased around the couch, being rotated on a twirly chair or tire, being held upside down, being attacked by the kissing monster, scattering pegs around the patio (and cleaning them up again!), feeding Mom or Dad his meal

Favorite hangouts: Parque Hidalgo, the zoo, the beach

Favorite words: dog and ¡ya! (enough!)

Baby Signs Update III

April 13, 2009 – 8:22 pm by jennie

Well, it’s been a while since I posted about Gilly’s signing. As with the spoken word, there are many more signs that he understands than that he himself uses. But here is a list of all the things that Gilly can sign in American Sign Language (ASL): dog, cat, ball, car, eat, milk, more, all done, shoes, hat, fan, light, flower and moon. He has a few that he’s tried out, but doesn’t consistently use yet, like the signs for bird, bear and play. He also has a few signs that he’s made up himself, for sun, giraffe and gorilla.

We’ve had many interesting and usually sweet moments, due to his signing. Tonight, in his bath, he was playing with an empty vitamin bottle. He filled it with water and then had me put the top on it. I was shaking it, and talking about the sound the water was making inside, and he kept making the sign for milk. At first I thought that he was telling me he wanted to get out and drink his before bed milk, but in the end it turned out that he was commenting on the fact that me shaking the water filled vitamin bottle was like me shaking his milk filled bottle. And he was right. :)

Beh-toe!

March 3, 2009 – 9:10 pm by jennie

We’ve been calling Gilly ‘Gilly’ on his blog, but as most of you know, he actually goes by ‘Beto’ in real life.  He goes by Beto for the time being because local pronunciation of Gilbert tends to be ‘Jilbert’, which drives Gilly’s mom crazy.  One nickname for Gilberto is ‘Gil’, but pronounced ‘hill’, which doesn’t really work for us English speakers either.  To get around all these pronunciation issues, we’ve settled upon Beto, which is a nickname for a number of -berto names…Alberto, Roberto, maybe Humberto…and, for us, Gilbert.  Some of our English speaking friends and family, though, have asked how to pronounce ‘Beto’, so here you go: just use the same ‘e’ sound as you use in the word ‘bed’, and stick a ‘toe’ on the end.  Easy peasy!

RAMPAGE!

Gilly’s really gotten quite adept at maneuvering around the house on his little dump truck and I wanted to get some footage of his mad driving skills. What I got, well, I’ll let the video speak for itself. It’s a little slice of life with Gilly for all to enjoy! RAMPAGE!

Beto’s Advertising Adventure

February 1, 2009 – 10:49 am by luke

A couple of weeks ago, when Beto and I went to his Friday morning early stimulation class, we were surprised to find the school director, a photographer, and a few other folk already in the classroom. They were all there to take a few shots of some of the kids for a new advertising brochure. We were the first to arrive to class, so Beto quickly become the target of the photographer’s attention. Beto, however, was less than a willing participant! Concerned by the numerous unusual faces and attention in the classroom, he vigorously avoided facing the camera. If, by chance, he was facing the camera, his face clearly betrayed his discomfort; not even his friend B1 the banana in pajamas could cheer him up! Finally, we started our normal class routine and Beto returned to his bubbly self, at which time the photographer was able to grab some nicer pictures of him. Beto managed to get himself into the brochure twice:

Front of brochure
Middle page from brochure
Detail of Beto on the front
Detail of Beto (and Daddy, and his friends Lucía y Constancia) from the middle page

You might notice that he’s still a little bit suspicious of what’s going on in his photo on the front page. A wade through the ball pit, however, makes everything better!
