A farewell to Little Monsters

The first blog post concerning the adventures of our little fella is, I’m afraid, an occasion marked by more than a little sadness. Tonight, you see, might well mark the last night that he gets to wear one of his most popular numbers, his Little Monster sleeper. I was able to guide his limbs in without too much struggle, and the fit around his legs happily leaves the impression that it’s been tailored exactly for him. Unfortunately, at his current rate of growth, that means that by the time that it’s ready for another wearing it will be cutting off circulation (indeed, I fear that if we were to leave him until midday tomorrow to change outfits then numbness of the legs may already have set in). Rest assured, he can stretch out his legs and, as I type, he’s happily drifted off to sleep.

I’m not sure what I actually like so much about the little monster outfit, because it’s hardly descriptive of our little friend; despite his monsteresque moments, I wouldn’t declare monsterliness as his primary attribute. I guess what amuses me is that the term “little monster” treads that delightfully fine line between affection and abuse (a line that this lot gleefully prances over) . The goofiness of the actual little monster emblem puts aside any fears that “little monster” refers to Gilbert, but the subtext is still there. And even if he is a little monster, he’s our little monster, and that’s what’s important. Plus, it makes for great photos with unflattering facial expressions and angles:

Though he can also pull off cute:

It’s also just horrifying how quickly he’s outgrowing his clothing. At least he’s managed to get a few wears out of this outfit, unlike all the other cute cozzies we bought that he was immediately too big for. No harm done, though — baby clothing shopping is mildly entertaining, save for our fresh fears that we’ll buy something too small for him. And, I’m told, there are other Little Monster-styled outfits! (one day, when he’s a quiz show host, I’d love to see the credits bearing “Gilbert Kirby styled by Little Monster”). At any rate, I’m sure that I’ll very quickly become familiar with rapid clothing turnover, and can take some solace that his garments will be finding other little bodies to adorn, as friends-of-friends have other freshly-baked babies.
